4th of July Star Trek Extravaganza

Monday, July 6th, 2009

So I’m going to go out on a limb and say that this year was the best 4th of July fireworks show I’ve seen yet. There’s something overwhelmingly awesome about timing fireworks to the Star Wars theme song.

Plus, that may not have even been the best event of the show. Along with the San Francisco Symphony (also performing music from 2001 space odyssey, the planets, etc.) there was a special guest narrator: George Takei, otherwise known as Mr. Sulu from Star Trek.  As George Takei came onto stage the first words he said weerrree:

*Queue full symphony Star Trek music* Space! The final frontier!

He then continued to go through the entire Star Trek intro (along with the original theme song playing in the background). They continued to play and narrate a whole bunch of other things with the general theme of “looking into our future” and playing other star trek songs like the next generations intro.

As a random aside. When I told my dad that George Takei did the whole “space… the final frontier” intro, it devolved into a discussion how only the captains of the enterprise are supposed to do the intro (William Shatner, Patrick Stewart, etc.) but that Spock was one exception, but also that Sulu at least eventually became a captain of the starship excelcesior. Anyways… it was a really nerdy moment…

*ahem* moving along… Well actually that’s pretty much it. We heard that cities we’re cutting budgets on the fireworks show but this one seemed like they had just as many fireworks if not more. Plus they impeccably timed the fireworks with the music from the symphony REALLY well and it was just overall extremely awesome. I think the night was pretty much summed up in two texts between me and michael that night.

Me: Wow. Awesome.
Michael: Standing O.

Anyhoo, picture time!

Below I have a nice little video I took with my Google G1(pretty decent video if you ask me…)

On a side note, it’s really lame that at&t and the flickr deal got cancelled. (at&t isp users we’re given a free flickr pro account, but then they took it away after a year or two).  The limits on free Picasa and Flickr accounts are pretty dumb…

Upcoming posts to look forward too: Stuff about Zazzle (zingers), epic overload, and maybe some other randomness

oh man… and I almost forgot (I actually did forget… and just came back to update the post), buuut traffic sucked when leaving the the shoreline so we watched Year One (only movie available at the time) and it sucked. The end.

Vegas Trip: David Copperfield Called Me Gay

Sunday, June 7th, 2009

Well, I believe his exact words were “That was good… kind of gay, but good”. Anyways I’m getting ahead of myself.

For Memorial Weekend Jaci and I decided to take a trip to Vegas. Normally we try to go for one of our birthdays but as Jaci was looking for flights, loh and behold she found cheap tickets for Memorial Day Weekend. 3 day weekend + lower prices = no brainer.

Anyhoo we were once again flying the party plane: Virgin America (think really excited flight attendants + pink neon lights on flight to Vegas, and really depressed/quiet/hungover flight attendants and passengers with dimmed lights on flight back) and unfortunately our flight was a bit delayed. It was a surprisingly foggy day and they weren’t letting any planes land. On a funny note, I’ve included a completely undoctored (seriously) photo taken by my phone below from the VA ticket counter.

In case no-one knows what I took a picture of…that is a picture of the VA ticket counter with a sad smiley face delay notice. Luckily the plane landed only about 45 minutes and we made up most of the time in the air.

On Friday night we just had a quick dinner (I already forgot where, Jaci can fill in the details later if she remembers) and then we had a David Copperfield magic show to check out. Jaci’s never seen a magic show, and I’ve never seen one in person so I figured it would be something that would be interesting to check out one at least once. So Jaci bought FRONT row tickets (literally the first row) and about 15 minutes before the show one of the magic show helper people comes up to me and goes “hello sir, would you like to participate in one of David’s magic tricks today?”

Of course… I pause and in my head I’m like “uhhh no… don’t really want to” so I look at jaci with what I can only imagine was a bemused expression in which she immediately blurts out “of course he will!” and pushes me up. I won’t go into too many details about the trick, but all it required me to do was to help make sure this box he was using was solid and involved some dancing ties (in the middle of which he calls me gay…) =P

Unfortunately we were not allowed to take any pictures during the show, so the only proof I have this event occurred is an official signed picture from Mr. Copperfield himself!

Other adventures included seeing Cirque’s O. This was the second time for me but I wanted to take Jaci there because I thought O was better than Ka. She disagrees but she still enjoyed it. Before the show we also ate at Le Cirque in the Bellagio which is a fancy circus themed restaurant which was pretty good. Otherwise our weekend was otherwise full of gambling and shopping. As always, Vegas trip was fun and enjoyable and I can’t wait until the next one =)

We don’t have many pictures from Vegas because #1 most of the places they don’t let you take pictures, #2 we don’t normally take that many pictures when we’re on vacation, and #3 all the pictures we (and by we I mean jaci) usually takes are of food… So what pictures we have are posted below for your enjoyment!

SuperCon 2009

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

So far I’m pretty surprised at how consistent I have been with updates. On the other hand, all TWO of them were comic book related things and as I likely won’t be going to another comic book convention until February 2010, we might be in trouble with my post count.

Anyways, SuperCon was an okay show this year. They had a lot of pretty cool names on the list and I managed to grab a few pieces. Unfortunately, the Adam Hughes disappointment still continues. I’ve been getting on his convention list since 2004 and have nothing to show for it yet. Well, I’m going to try to stay positive and hopefully I’ll get one next year!

So before I get into the pieces I got, I just wanted to mention, pretty much every time I drag Jaci to a comic book convention, I need to take her shopping to appease her. Normally it’s pretty terrible, but we made a quick stop at Anthropologie, perhaps my most hated store because #1 I don’t get it…is it old? is it new? is it just really expensive? and #2 its very perfumee, smelly and is terrible for my allergies. However, she got something I semi approve of =P

anthropologie-omg

ZING! Maybe next year we’ll pick up the letters h4x. =P

So, far my pictures here I think I’ll be sticking with Picasa for awhile (or at least until I hit their 1GB storage…which isn’t that much all Google things considered),.

The piece I got include (larger thumbnails below):

  • a SuperGirl piece from Whilce Portacio. Pretty stoked about this piece. Whilce is one of the original founders of Image Comics and is most  known for his work on Punisher, X-Factor and more recently Spawn.
  • A quick sketch from Travis Charest of his original character Spacegirl
  • Another Supergirl piece from Joe Benitez
  • A quick sketch from Humberto Ramos of Supergirl
  • And finally a commission from Eduardo Risso of Supergirl
  • pending I got on Talent Caldwell’s list first thing but he had artists block on it so he said he’ll aim to finish it this Friday.

** POST CON UPDATE **

So kind of funny story. One of my co-workers heard of my sadness about yet another lost chance at my Adam Hughes commission so on Monday when I came to work I was welcomed with a nice surprise. Not an Adam Hughes piece, but a Calestar Original Punisher!!!111 Bam! Demian out!
