No internet = No posts

Hey Folks,

Me and jaci totally forgot, but we don’t have internet in our rooms at the Cairns! Everything is going great and the weather is absolutely lovely, but we likely won’t be able to post any updates until we get back!

We’re still keeping up with our journals on our computers though so we’ll post what we have if we’re able, but don’t be worried if you don’t see anything from us =)

Australia – Sydney – Day 1

Pre-Flight

With the craziness of the wedding, we hadn’t really had a chance to pack for ~2 week trip to Sydney, Australia. With our flight leaving the day after our wedding, we started the day with Jaci’s desire to splurge on fat and carbs. She’s been keeping a steady diet pre-wedding to make sure she was in tiptop shape and so she wanted some FAT. So we went to counter burger and she got a big fatty burger. Afterwards, before starting to pack, we returned the groomsmens tuxes at santana row and went shopping for a video game I wanted to take along with me for the honeymoon. This left us approximately 4 hours before we needed to take off to start packing, and thats what we did!

17hr flight

Thanks to my parents, we were upgraded to business class for the flight. Pretty old 747 but made a huge difference in the terms of space and sleeping. Jaci fell asleep right away and slept for like 10 hours, and I fell asleep after watching chronicles of narnia 2, and slept for like 13 hours, only an hour or two before we were about to land. The flight was pretty uneventful and we were pretty glad we got plenty of rest, since our flight arrived at the airport at 6:30am.

Arrival

Unfortunately, it seems we may have packed for a bit warmer weather than we had planned. It’s been approximately 60-70 degrees the two days we’ve been here, and I only packed short sleeve t-shirts. I have a couple of light jackets and a blazer, but jaci’s still a bit cold in her peacoat. When we first arrived, we grabbed a taxi and headed to our hotel, in Potts Point. We’re right next to King’s Cross, which I would compare the are to nicer mission, with a few massage parlors and gentleman’s clubs. If you stick to the harbor its all real nice neigherborhoods though.

When our taxi dropped us off we were in a for a little bit of scare.  The front door was locked and it had a note that we should call this number to get help. We called the number and it kept going to a voicemail, Jaci left a message but nobody answered. There was a guy with a flashlight who walked up behind us who said he’d been trying to get a hold of somebody in the hotel since he was hired to do work for about an hour but nobody answered. Luckily, in about 10 or 15 minutes after knocking every once in awhile, the owner of the hotel answered the door.

Originally, our room wasn’t going to be ready until 3:00pm that afternoon, but luckily the room was ready earlier and we were able to check and relax a little bit. After we checked in and washed up, the hotel owner suggested we take a walk around the area we were staying in and drew us a little map for us to walk around. Before walking around we were starving and headed to a place approximately 2.4km or a 30 minute walk from our hotel. Jaci found out about Bills from Gourmet magazine. I had a delicious corn fritter sandwich like thinger, and Jaci had Ricotta pancakes. Both were extremely delicious and jaci ended up eating half of hers and I had most of mine and finished half of hers. Both were quite yummy.

After breakfast, we decided to the walk our hotel owner suggested. First stop was to walk down by the pier. And at the end of the pier? Russel Crowe’s apartment! The two lions are the markers that he used to let us know which one was his. Apparently he paid approximately $14 million for this place, and we couldn’t tell if he owned all the flours or if it was just that one. The pier also had a nice view of the Sydney’s Woolloomooloo bay. After the pier we walked around towards the Royal Botanic Gardens and we got there via the Mrs Macquaries road. On the way we saw some pretty weird birds, which we later found out are called Ibis, apparently the pigeons of australia. At the end of Mrs. Macquaries road is a nice view of the Opera house and Bridge. Once we were in the garden, we saw some cute cockatoos, gigantic, trees, and bats… We got lost a bit in the gardens, and it took us awhile to get out, but once we did we decided to look for a place to do a little shopping (approximate walking distance, 5.4km)

After our walk, jaci wanted to check out the Queen Victoria building which is supposed to be this schmancy mall area set in a super old building. Unfortunately around this time my camera started running out of batteries, we were able to take pictures of the huge sky tower, and the main church, St Mary’s Cathedral. The victoria’s building was pretty much had santana row type shops. Jaci bought a chili leaf chocolate but otherwise we made no other purchases. (approximate walking distance, 1.5km)

So we wanted to head back and rest up a little bit for dinner. We were trying to decide whether to take a taxi, train, or walk. We decided to be cheap and try to walk back. Unfortunately we got a little bit lost, took a strange detour, walked by where all the homeless people lived, but eventually made it back. (Approximate walking distance, 3.6km)

We rested up a bit, a grabbed dinner at Fratelli Paradiso, a  small italianish style place near our hotel. It was too dark to take pictures (and almost see each other) but I ended up having a pork risotto and jaci had a jon dori. Both were pretty good. First day, not to bad… an awful lot of walking though about 8.01 miles. For those of you that know me, getting me to walk a mile is a big effort… so suffice to say, both of us were extremely tired. Look forward to Jaci’s next post… about our Sydney bicycle tour… dun dun dun
