When:
12/2/007 (sunday) from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Where:
Check the evite for our address, or you can give one of us a call if you get lost. Woodside Rd. is the biggest and closest cross street since we’re just a couple blocks away from it. If the directions you get are telling you to make any other turns you might want to talk to us first!

Random musings:
Well well well… we’re finally getting around to setting up a house warming party thinger. As with all of our eventees, if there is any information we’ll update this post. Similarily, if you wanted to be kept up to date on any of our posts/rants you can subscribe to our blog and get e-mail notifications whenever we post anything new.

We finally finished unpacking everything (almost) and have got most of the furniture we wanted to get. We still have quite a bit of work to do… but as we are quickly learning, it seems the works never done! With both of us being so busy its been tough to balance what to prioritize between work, school, house stuff, and wedding stuff! Anyhoo, we hope everyone will be able to stop by and hang out for a little bit. Leave a comment or give us a call if you guys have any questions =)

We’re In!

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

It’s a miracle!  Demian and I finally moved into our new house in Redwood City, and life is good!  Things are still a bit messy around here, but we’re slowly getting around to putting everything away.  The more and more I look at the house, the more I love it.  It seems just so perfect for us, and so comfortable.

On Friday, the official move-in day, Demian and I celebrated at The Village Pub, and had the best meal we’ve ever had there – and we’ve been to The Village Pub a lot!  It’s been quite awhile since I’ve eaten anything that really wowed me, so this was really the perfect way to “reward” ourselves for the hard work we’ve been putting into moving.  Demian started out with a subtly sweet, incredibly smooth Sweet Corn and Sorrel Soup while I opted for the incredibly innovative and deliciously well balanced Shaved Foie Gras Torchon / Hazelnut Vinaigrette / Poached Plum Salad.  I’ve eaten my fair share of foie gras, and have never seen it this way – shaved into smooth, rich, little curls (must have been frozen first to get that effect), atop mixed greens for a little brightness, dressed in hazelnut vinagrette and sprinkled with some hazelnuts for some nuttiness and crunch, with a foundation of a few soft, tart-but-sweet poached plums.  Really an achievement in flavor and texture combinations, and something very different.  Yum!  Went really well with my German Riesling.

For our entree, Demian ordered the duck special (with a fig reduction), and I ordered the Grilled Rack of Pork with Apple and Fennel Salad and Polenta.  Perfectly cooked – firm but juicy – pork that gave way under the knife, sweet roasted apples with crisp, fresh fennel bulbs and leaves, and creamy, rich, sweet polenta.  Mmmmm.  Impressive!

We capped off the evening with dessert – Demian with some pretty authentic beignets (Cafe du Mond style, not glorified donut holes) with this delicious creme caramel (smooth and sweet, without being too sweet), and me with a creamy, but light and bright chilled passion fruit souffle and roasted pineapple – refreshing and satisfying.

Yesterday, Demian and I went up to the Infineon Raceway in Sonoma to take a Highway Survival Course from the Jim Russell Racing School – I had bought the classes for him for his birthday, but it turned out it was probably better for me than for him, since he’s already a pretty skilled driver.  They put us through three types of courses.  The first was a drifting simulation, where they fix a car so that it feels like it’s drifting over black ice, or an oil spill - they teach you how to counteract the spin and how to use the gas and brake so that you can get to your destination safely.  The next course was a high speed stop and turn, teaching you how to brake when you don’t have anti-lock brakes, so that you don’t lock up the wheel and plow through a bunch of cones, like I did…heh.  The last course was my favorite – sudden lane changes to avoid obstacles.  We did these at increasing speeds, with no braking, so it was really a challenge to sudden swerve, but then correct your course so that you didn’t just fly off into the ethos.  It was also a challenge not to apply the brakes too early, otherwise your tail will spin out on you.  The last event of the day was a timed obstacle course – SO FUN!   Of course, I got second to last place (the honor of last place going to the only other girl in the class), but it was still so fun to race around those cones lol.  Mostly, each of these three courses teaches you how not to panic, which I think was key, because I feel like my first reaction to everything was to apply the brakes, even if that isn’t the right thing to do.

Anyway, today is grocery day, and hopefully putting-away-the-rest-of-our-crap day, so I best get started.  Hopefully I’ll be able to start blogging about wedding things soon!

T-Minus 9 Days…

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

It’s nine days until our planned move-in date, and finally things feel like they’re coming together.  The hardwood floors and tiles have been installed, we’ve hooked up the new garage door opener for the third car garage door, put in a new water heater (apparently the original water heater was OLDER THAN THE HOUSE!), and are just waiting on a couple more things (painters to finish up, new gutter section to get put in, and the appliances and furniture to be delivered, etc.).  I have not felt so in need of a break since the bar exam!  I am totally ready to move in and for this house to finally feel like it’s ours, not just a money trap!  There’ve been so many unexpected expenses and appointments that take away time from work, family, and each other, but I feel like we’re learning a lot about how to take care of the house and ourselves – I’m tempted to call it priceless, but I have a Redwell folder of receipts that proves otherwise.

One light at the end of the tunnel is that Demian and I will celebrate our move-in with dinner at the Village Pub – the seasonal menu looks sooo good right now.  I’ve just got to hold on until next Friday…then maybe I can actually get back to some WEDDING PLANNING!  (And, of course, some wedding-related blogging…)  Once we settle in, Demian and I will be sure to post some before and after pics of our new house!

Tile Nightmare – Part Deux

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

So to follow up on Demian’s post about the horror that was tile shopping, there were a couple other hiccups and one big pain in the bum revolving around our tile installation.  One of the hiccups was that it turned out that Bedrosians in San Jose didn’t have the tile we wanted after all.  After some panic and scrambling, fortunately, our tile guy was able to find an even better (cheaper and more aesthetically pleasing) substitute at the Tile Outlet in San Jose.  The second hiccup came during the signing of the contract with the tile guy – I had requested OVER AND OVER again to see the contract before the day of work so I could review and make appropriate changes.  When I didn’t have the contract the night before, I decided to draft my own.  Sure enough, the day that installation began, there were some major discrepancies in the contracts - in addition to being grossly inadequate, the tile guy’s version of the contract had some increased price quotes and previously unmentioned charges.  I had to do some bargaining and tough positioning, which did not exactly endear me to the tile guy, but ultimately I felt comfortable with the contract enough to sign it.

Things went smoothly enough until the day that the tile was scheduled for completion (this Saturday).  This is when the poop hit the fan.  So on Saturday afternoon of this long weekend, the tile guy calls me around 4:30 to say that he is coming back to the house to finish up, and asks me to meet him at 5 because he will be done at that time.  I get there at 5, and he and his crew are still working.  It gets later and later, and finally they “finish” around 5:45 – I take a look around, and it appears (1) the doors have not been replaced, and (2) the baseboard in the master bath has not been replaced.  I ask about the latter, and tile guy innocently asks, “oh…did you want that?”  Um, yes!  So they fish the baseboard *out of the garbage* (!!!) and replace it.  Then, after I have to explicitly ask them to, they begin the process of replacing the doors…except it’s taking forever.  Then I realize, the tile guy is gone.  I ask his crew where he went – apparently, they had thrown out the hinge bolts for the downstairs bathroom (!!!) so the tile guy went to Orchard Supply to buy the bolts…it’s now 6:15…he returns with the bolts…which are the wrong size.  He disappears again as the crew digs through the garbage to find the bolts…he takes awhile…then I notice his crew go upstairs and start hammering on the other doors.  This makes me suspicious.  Then they come downstairs, and the downstairs bathroom door has miraculously been hung up.  Curiouser and curiouser!  So I go upstairs, smelling something fishy - and find they have just taken the bolts from the upstairs bathroom doors to use in the lower bathroom door, hoping I wouldn’t notice.  WTF!  I call them on it, and tell them this is NOT okay.  At this point, the tile guy returns and has gotten the right bolts; he must have known what was going on with his workers, because he makes a beeline for upstairs to replace the bolts in the door upstairs and door downstairs.  It is 6:30 now – I have been waiting an hour and a half.  Everything is finally done, except the garbage from all the demo is sitting in my driveway.  The tile guy says that someone will be along to pick it up in the next fifteen minutes…given how hard it’s been to get a hold of him, I tell the tile guy that I just cannot pay him until completion of the job – which includes removal of the garbage.  After all, that’s what it says in BOTH of our contracts.  At this, the tile guy gets pissed – he says I’m “incredible” (and not in the good way).  He says, “Can’t we just work on trust?”  Instead of pointing out that his guys just tried to cheat me out of the bolts in my door hinges, I just tell him the contract says payment upon completion.  He is still pissed, and accuses me of never sending him a copy of the contract we signed.  I tell him I sent him a copy of the contract to the email he provided – and he admits he never checked his email.  His garbage guys come at this point, and begin loading.  I hand him his check, and he storms out.

I was SOOOO pissed!  I couldn’t believe that he outright tried to CHEAT me, and then accused ME of being untrustworthy, all after he made me wait AN HOUR AND A HALF ON A BEAUTIFUL SATURDAY AFTERNOON for him to finish.  Just ugh!

I was still livid through dinner with Demian, until…we went to Therapy in Mountain View!  Dude…best…store….ever.  The cutest shoes, clothes, furniture, decor, accessories…drooooool.  I am so shallow, but after Demian bought me this adorable little clutch and nifty little owl candle for the new house, I felt freaking all better!

Stay tuned for before and after pics of the house – we’re almost done with the renovation!

Whoooo whoooo!
